"Operation On-Target" is a Varsity Scout activity (see Wikipedia) where scouts ascend mountain peaks and signal over surprisingly long distances with reflected sunlight from signal mirrors. Here are flashes seen at Margarita Peak, California from San Jacinto (48 miles), San Gorgonio (56 miles) and Keller Peak (55 miles), the latter using a 9"x9" mirror. The scout record is 177 miles - from Mt. Charleston, NV, to San Jacinto, CA. The video concludes with a panoramic view from Margarita Peak. Margarita Peak is a bit challenging (Class 2 climb) with a rather tiny top - Margarita Peak Lookout (2 miles north) with a spacious top and almost the same views is far more popular. We braved Margarita Peak because some of our southern targets are masked by Margarita Peak from Margarita Lookout.

  • I'm also amazed that you all set up all at the same time on four amazing peaks like that.....especially since they're quite far from each other! Also.....watch out for mountain lions up there! Best of luck to you all in the future! =)

  • @TemeculaValleyLapse Thanks - glad you liked the video. The climb is pretty steep in spots - just shy of needing to use my hands. I was glad I brought a climbing pole, and if I do it again, I'll bring two.

  • You are welcome!

Fallbrook, eh? Margarita Peak (where I was) is only 10 miles (as the crow flies) NW of Fallbrook, and most of Fallbrook can see (and can be seen) from Margarita Peak. Fallbrook is in the foreground at about 2:50 into the movie - when I call out "Cuyamaca".

  • @rafowell You're welcome! Had that day been more clear, you guys could've had someone up on Agua Tibia Mountain and/or someone way out on Santa Catalina Island! XD

  • Haha WOW is that awesome! I live in nearby Temecula and I've always wanted to hike Margarita Peak myself. I mean the actual peak, not that lookout off to the side! I like Margarita Peak because of it's very unique, yet remote location, the fact that I can see it from so many places and it being close to Camp Pendleton and the coast, far from any real development. It's a hidden gem that not many people know about unlike other peaks. I couldn't imagine the view from up there on a clear winter day!

  • That was us- Team 718 from Fallbrook on San Gorgonio. Thanks for teaching us how to make the great peep sight.
