On most teams Jordan Staal would center the first or second line. But in Pittsburgh, due to their embarrassment of riches down the middle, he is relegated to the third line.
Nevertheless, the Thunder Bay, Ont., native has made the most of his situation, emerging as a reliable two-way player.
In 82 games last season, Staal had 22 goals, 49 points and was a plus-5 while playing against the leagues top lines. This year, Staal looks to further expand his role with the Pens.
Ted Cooper takes a closer look at the evolution of Jordan Staal.
