Today United Way of Monroe County and Area 10 Agency on Aging took the next step to raise awareness of the 2-1-1 Information and Referral service in Monroe and Owen counties. A media event in the Bloomington City Council Chambers highlighted the value 2-1-1 has offered to the community and introduced the new 2-1-1 Ambassadors program. The Ambassadors begin their work immediately. In support of this important service, Governor Mitch Daniels has proclaimed February 11, 2011 as "Indiana 2-1-1 Day".
2-1-1 is a three-digit phone number that connects people seeking services with the appropriate community organizations. Trained Information and Referral Specialists answer each call and provide personalized and up-to-date information about local social service agencies. Free and confidential, 2-1-1 is available 24/7 and is a nationwide initiative. During the event, United Way and Area 10 representatives, along with other community members, shared information about the vital role and potential growth of the 2-1-1 service in Monroe and Owen Counties.
