Roy Orbison left Monument Records for MGM Records I believe (around 1965?) He had much less success, but hopefully, The MGM material has been collected on a CD somewhere. The
4 or 5 songs thet I have heard of MGM are quite good, including this one.
I think Ride Away is one of Roy's very best and I interpret the song as being about Roy's rocky relationship with the love of his life Claudette Orbison. Stragely he didn't sing this great song in the concerts that I went to sort of like Billy Joel and Uptown Girl, maybe it's too personal. Anyway the only one who can answer this is Billy Dees who co-wrote the song.
Bill Dees, who co-wrote many of these songs with Roy once sat down and asked my advice for a motorcycle for his daughter. That blew me away as this very song here is what got me into bikes when I was a kid. This happened in New Boston, TX in about 1988, while Bill lived there.
Wow! I haven't heard this one in years!! In the mid-60's there was a radio station in Jackson, MI, WIBM 1450 AM that played this quite a bit. You really have to search as it's not on a lot of his greatest hits releases. Excellent song and of course, he sings it so well!
