This is a lesson on how to play the song Fix It by Ryan Adams and The Cardinals off of the CD entitled Cardinology. This lesson is taken from the video off The Cardinals performing this song on Letterman. That video can be found here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Si14rmNJcvA

This lesson will cover several topics including : guitar riffs, solo (s), chords, grips, shapes, pentatonic scales, techniques, and how to perform this song.

Guitar 1 (Ryan Adams) is panned left with a gritty, ES-335 type overdriven sound. Played with a heavy-handed riff style for the verse, the chorus switches to a more airy strum. And don't forget the reverb!

Guitar 2 is panned right with a clean, chorused Les Paul sound with some reverb and a slapback delay. It has a nice bright tone, with some overdrive kicked on for the solo at the end. The chorus in the song should be arpeggiated on this guitar to provide a nice flowing sound. The solo is blues-based and very greasy, meaning it uses a lot of slurs (term for notes not picked, i.e. slides, bends, hammer-ons, and pull-offs). The solo live is dirtier (having more overdrive) than the one on the record, and also more complex. I find both to be wonderful, but the live solo really moves me.

I hope you enjoy learning how to play this excellent song by Ryan Adams, and please check out my other video lessons, including Jimi Hendrix, Pearl Jam, original songs, and funk techniques here: http://www.youtube.com/shaynegibbs

  • thank you very much!! it's very helpful :))

  • You're welcome and thank you

  • really good man! but what about the intro?

  • You're right! I haven't actually spent the time to figure it out yet, but it sounds like a simple ascending run through the A minor scale. I'll try to figure it out soon and post a tab or something. Thanks for watching

  • Oh shit, thought it was Fix You

  • excellent lesson!!! really good teacher. thanks very much sir.

  • sneaky snake. lol

  • good tutelage but man, a little heavy handed on the bottom end of those chords...might just be the modern metal tone you've got goin' on, maybe should split the humbuckers to some single coil tones, but it should be a little lighter on the bottom and a little heavier on the top.

    just my humble opinion...

  • @RedNeckSpice save your money and just buy a better used one on craigslist...you can get some good deals on pretty nice guitars.

  • thanks so much.
