The high-toned squeal is caused by the internal windings in the flyback vibrating at high frequencies and from the sound of that one, each internal winding is hitting a different (k)Hz range that could easily rival nails on a chalkboard. All of them adding up in that special harmony creating that lovely melody that will drive your pets, flat-mates, and neighbors bonkers. (my dogs wont come NEAR my HV playroom for days after one of my flybacks makes a squeal that loud.)

@noctres Thanks for the explanation. My family seem to have a dislike for anything that makes a loud noise, from high voltage arcs to capacitors being discharged they are always telling me to stop it. My cat on the other hand seems to be more interested than my family as he will sit a few feet away from the arcs and watch it, but he hates loud low frequency snapping sparks. When I put a high voltage capacitor in parallel with the flyback transformer and spark gap he runs out of the room.

@remzi133 lol, its great for annoying family members with though! I have a couple of flyback transformer salvaged from old CRT TV's/monitors and I have found some of them make this noise when using the built in primary coils but are very quiet when using a primary coil wound around the core.
Thanks for the sub btw!

are you running this on DC?

@MrSciencetificsasuke Yes, power source is 3x 6v lantern battery's in series (18v) although they are almost dead in this video.
Current draw was about 1.5-2amp using the internal primary and feedback coils.
