¡Triste España sin ventura!
Todos te deben llorar,
despoblado de alegría,
para nunca en ti tornar.
Pierdes Principe tan alto,
hijo de reyes sin par.
Llora, llora, pues perdiste
quien te había de ensalçar.

En su tierna juventud
te lo quiso Dios llevar.
De tan penosa tristura
no te esperes consolar.
Que si pones dilaçion
en venir a socorrerme,
no podras despues valerme
segun mi grave passion.
No quieras mi perdiçion
pues en tu bondad confío.
Duelete de dolor mio.

Que de essa parte se halla
descanso de mis tormentos,
y en aquesta la batalla
de mis tristes perdimientos.
¡O ventura! Trae los vientos
humildes, mansos, sin brio,
duelete del dolor mio.

Porque de essa parte esta
gloria, descanso, holgura,
y en esta do sta aca
congox, penas, tristura.
Pues no niegues la ventura
que esta puesta en tu navio,
duelete del dolor mío.


O wretched, ill fated Spain!
All must weep for you, bereft of happiness, never to find yourself again.
You lose a prince so worthy, son of unrivalled monarchs.
Weep, weep, for the loss of him who would have raised you.
In the tenderness of youth.
God took him from you.
From such a terrible grief you cannot hope to find consolation.
For if you delay in coming to my aid, later you will be no use to me, my passion is so great.
You do not wish to cause my downfall, since I trust in your kindness.
Take pity on my suffering.
For on the other side I shall find respite from my agony, while on this, only conflict between my warring emotions.
O fate! Send me winds gentle, mild and quiet: take pity on my suffering.

For on that other side are pleasure, tranquillity, delight, while here where I am are anguish, strife and pain.
So do not deny me the chance your boat can bring me: take pity on my suffering.
