I think so, too. When you see a video of a paramecium sitting there and then swimming over a few "inches(I don't know the right measurement for something so small)", it is deciding to move over a few inches.
Snails too. I like Science, but I wouldn't want to do any possibly painful experimenting on things, even paramecium. I know we probably kill lots little thing just by sitting down or cleaning things off, but those aren't really avoidable. On purpose feels different.

The paramecia become volatile once their pellicle collide, due to cilia resistance, this wouldn't occur excluding mitosis processes
