What brand and color of stain did you use? What brand shellac? Do you have a video of the finished Credenza after shellac?

Great, now I don't feel bad about not lacquering mine after all. Thanks!

WOW, Louie! That is a perfect stripping! Right down to the wood as new! I am so amazed by your numerous abilities :-) It really looks beautiful! I think it is superb!

One more thing - you stated it was next-to-impossible to get that darker/lighter effect using staining - so what all did you have to do to get that to come out? Looks like it worked out very well ! On the Credenza I refinished last month (my first cabinet resto) I didn't risk it, since screwed-up staining is not easy to correct.
Thanks!

I used a light color stain over the entire cabinet, then went over the edges with black stain.

Great job! I just finished a similar total strip/sand/stain on my own Credenza last week. No bad veneer though, just a worn-out refinish that someone did long ago in a yucky light stain. I only finished with shellac - this is my FIRST refinish try and didn't want to push it since it looks quite nice this way; maybe I'll top it with lacquer at a later date.
I just love taking old machines like this and making them work and look as new as I am able to. It's really like having a time machine!

I started using lacquer (inside of the doors) but could not stand the smell of it! Seriously after 10 minutes I felt a little faint and switched to shellac. The outcome looks the same to me.
