Recorded live at the Sydney Opera House for the Max Sessions in 2005. This song is included in kd lang's 'Hymns Of The 49th Parallel' album.
LYRICS:
Now I've heard there was a secret chord
That David played, and it pleased the Lord
But you don't really care for music, do you?
It goes like this
The fourth, the fifth
The minor fall, the major lift
The baffled king composing Hallelujah
Hallelujah Hallelujah
Hallelujah Hallelujah
Your faith was strong but you needed proof
You saw her bathing on the roof
Her beauty and the moonlight overthrew you
She tied you
To a kitchen chair
She broke your throne, and she cut your hair
And from your lips she drew the Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah
You say I took the name in vain
I don't even know the name
But if I did, well really, what's it to you?
There's a blaze of light
In every word
It doesn't matter which you heard
The holy or the broken Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah
I did my best, it wasn't much
I couldn't feel, so I tried to touch
I've told the truth, I didn't come to fool you
And even though
It all went wrong
I'll stand before the Lord of Song
With nothing on my tongue but Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Hallelujah

  • Nobody, nobody, but NOBODY sings this song like she does. I have heard it done well by others but when she sings it she owns it. I think she was a discovery/protégé of Roy Orbison before he died.

  • Gorgeous creature, I'm on my knees for you.

  • 5 people need to check and see if they still have a soul...

  • K.D. Lang was born to sing this song. You feel the broken Hallelujah and it spills through your sole until you are drenched in its warmth and by its depth of its despair. Bless Leonard Cohen and k.D. Lang for this song.

  • I have seen both Cohen and Land sing this live... They are (almost) the same words, the same power, the same passion and yet completely different. I would not hesitate to listen to one, followed by the other, and get just as much out of each

  • The good thing about her is that she sings loud but doesn't sound screamy or like she's yelling, it's raw power and nothing else. I love her voice so much.

  • This Sydney version is lang's best performance of the song.

  • No big surprise that the phenomenal kd lang can bring "Hallelujah" fans to their knees in prayer. She has been covering it for the past 7 years. This particular version is overwhelming.

  • EAR-GASMIC....WOW ...OMG... this is the BEST version of this song... WOW! She is Canadian, she is Buddhist, She is Vegetarian, She is an animal activist, she is Gay and I LOVE her voice... effortless perfection.. true artistic creation.. she owns this song and pours it out of her heart into the core of your being -

  • been listening to this version..and others for a couple of years now..and still shivers up my spine from this version..

  • she sings this with the hart!
