A small plane took us to Angguruk, Yali's main village, from where for five days we hiked the most rugged terrain reaching Panggema and by another small plane we finally returned to Wamena

  • i see your guide was Martinus! :) how was your experience with him?

  • Martinus has been our guide 3 times over 5 years. Although a bit inexperienced in the beginning, his excellent knowledge of the territory made him a good guide. He was kind, helpful and informative. Obviously you met him recently; what is your opinion? Where in the Baliem did you trek?

  • in which year it was shoot this video?

  • early August 2004

I met Martinus Siap back in 1993 when he was just a kid. He's from the village of Manda in the northern part of the Baliem. If you go back and see him ask him to take you to the Kimbim to 'listen to the mountain' . This will involve a dive into the glacier fed Kimbim river and grasping onto a boulder while cobbles roll and bounce around you. Noisy! Great guy and a really unexpected surprise to see him in your video.
