I was only getting old enough (age 13) to understand music at all when Mr. Partch died in 1974. But his Columbia recordings were readily available, I bought them and listened carefully, and his influence has stayed with me ever since. What was it? "If you don't like the rules, make up your own!" That's what. Also, if you "color outside the lines," make sure the results are significantly better than what you'd get if you'd colored inside them.
I think I'll design a clean VST based on this theory. Great ideas. H's probably the Pythagoras of our time: mathematically inclined, logical, and indeed very innovative.
But he's no musician. I honestly can't say I enjoyed what I heard.
Not a musician!! I suggest you clean your ears before desiging a clean VST... This is corporeal music of the highest order the cererebral element helps shape it, it doesn't generate it. Partch is a true blues man, check his early recording, history and writing...
Hm... I've never enjoyed any of Mr. Partch's creations either, but I would never say he's no musician. His creations are interesting and unique. It may not be your cup of tea (well, it's definitely not mine), but you gotta give creadit where credit is due.
Don't put something down just because you dodn't like it.
One of the most original of composers... its one thing to create yr own forms; structures for expression; it's quite another to created yr own instruments... especially microtonal ones at that and have extremely complex scores with multiple new instruments.. let alone style, genre, etc...... i've always loved h. partch!!!!
Very interesting. I wonder if Harry Partch ever looked into Indian music... I think that Harry Partch was on to something really significant. Though there are some good stuff, i think that it was in its baby stage and needs more growth and development.
More growth and development, eh? Bollocks! Partch grew his music from a seed, he didn't steal it, unlike just about every other 'serious' composer on the planet. He took it to places most 'serious' composers wouldn't have a hope in hell in reaching in ten lifetimes - even with middle class approved college education. Be honest, it frightens you because it makes your imagination feel insignificant, which it obviously is.
