I was surprised when the term hippie started to show up in comments on my channel recently.

hip•pie also hip•py (hĭp'ē) n. pl. hip•pies

Today's definition:

1.) A derogatory label for members of a movement of cultural protest that began in the United States in the 1960s and affected Europe before fading in the 1970s. Some Americans still blame them for America losing the Vietnam War.

2.) A word used with disdain by those who claim to be today's American "Counter-Culture," the chicly cynical, hipster, (actually) pop culture, teenyboppers who vehemently avoid politics, consider activism passé, believing that self-absorbed non-involvement is hip. After all, "any involvement supports the system," anyway "It's all good!"

Yet some are now commenting that they are proud to call themselves hippies, perhaps relating the word to the type of people who were involved in these non-violent movements?

*November, 2003 - The Rose Revolution, Georgia democracy movement
*October, 2000 - The Bulldozer Revolution in Yugoslavia that toppled Milosevic
*December, 1991 - The Singing Revolution, fight for free Estonia
*November, 1991 - The Orange Revolution in the Ukraine
*December, 1989 - The Velvet Revolution, the fight to end communism in Czech Republic
*August, 1989 - The Baltic Way, approximately two million people joined their hands to form an over 600 kilometer long human chain across the three Baltic states
*February, 1986 - The EDSA Revolution, Corazon Aquino's people power revolution in the Philippines
*August, 1942 - The Quit India March, Mahatma Gandhi

...and so on, a cultural lineage that stretches back to the beginning of civilization, underground, re-emerging at times to challenge wayward social systems gone amok - the real Counter-Culture.

This video is of us, the morning of the Massive March on DC.

If my friends in this vid are considered hippies, well then, I'd feel honored if I can call myself a hippie too.

PS. Thanks for the inspiration Sha, JenMarie and Syl.

  • hippies never went away, they just raised their children with the same views and morals...thankfully there are still hippies! people who are smart enough question authority can obviously think for themselves....which is exactly what the world needs! I enjoy being the black sheep among a flock of look-alikes, wouldn't want to live any other way!

  • I don't think the hippie movement ever died...people just avoided the term in the 80s and 90s. Nowadays I and my friends freely use to the term to describe ourselves, even though the term isn't perfect in its descriptive value. It just seems to get some idea across faster than any viable alternative. Greetings from a San Francisco hippie girl...
