Thank you very much to:

Neil Andersson (Pearl Django, The Sinfonietta Jazz Quartet, Malibu Manouche) and
Michael Horowitz (The Djangomatics, Djangobooks.com)

These gentlemen are fixtures in the Northwest jazz scene and have each played dozens of the seminal guitars in this genre. They are very supportive of my efforts to produce no-compromise bench copies of seminal gypsy jazz guitars (Mr. Andersson owns my first Modele Jazz, and Michael Horowitz is my North American distributor) and they were nice enough to make time to play one of my Modele Jazz guitars with the guitar that inspired it... the sublime Selmer #863 which grew up in the Bal Musette halls in post-war Paris and which is currently available at djangobooks.com.

The gentlemen played the song twice, switching guitars for the second cut. I spliced this video together using iMovie. The Selmer is always first in the lead section - followed by the Holo Modele Jazz. I attempted to level the brightness of the video segments because it kept varying due to clouds passing by the windows and the result was somewhat distracting, but there is no audio post-processing. What you hear is exactly what happened in the room that day. I recorded it with a Panasonic Lumix ZS3 camera, a good consumer-grade video camera with built-in stereo mics, but this is not a professional recording by any means.

Thanks again to these gentlemen whose expertise, advice, knowledge and feedback are so helpful as I pursue my goal of producing the most authentic instruments possible. Without real historical instruments to study and the feedback of experienced top musicians in the genre, it would be impossible for me to pursue my dream.

  • Thanks Leigh. I've really enjoyed your channel - great stuff - your fingerwork on that old 335 is crazy clean. (song: All The Things You Are)

  • i think neil sounds best with the selma and the other guitarists sounds best with the holo. however i think this is a fantastic recreation of a guitar that is completely overlooked and very underrated. well done! also fantastic playing obviously.
