    Young people speak mandarin, even English.

  • @milootis10 modern mandarin and taiwanese diverged during middle chinese, as well as canto and a bunch of other languages, around 1500 years ago..

    I'd say that they are as similar as the english is to german, or french.

    Taiwanese and Japan have kept some ancient pronounciation of Chinese words.

    Besides, Taiwan was a colony of Japan for 50 years, so Taiwanese contains some Japanese worlds, such as ojisan, sensei, toraku, kimochi...etc.
