The 'shared space' philosophy was created by the late Hans Monderman, a Dutch road traffic engineer and innovator. Monderman found that the traffic efficiency and safety of urban streets improved when the street and surrounding public space was redesigned to encourage each person to negotiate their movement directly with others. At Drachten, The Netherlands, the 'Laweiplein' roundabout was redesigned in 2003, using this philosophy.
The number of reported accident has decreased substantially since.
