my home computer lab, aka. honeypot. brief run-down on some old iron, 1990's server technology from IBM, Dell, Compaq, and Sun.

1. 2 x IBM PCServer 330 w/ 2 x PPro @ 200Mhz, 1M L2; 320M w/ EDO; ServeRAID, 4 SCSI w/ striping @ 512byte blocks; Gentoo2007, Apache2, Qmail

2. Dell PowerEdge 4200 w/ 2 x Pentium2 @ 300Mhz, 512k L2; 512M w/ 12 DIMMs; Dell OpenMgr card; redundant power supply; PERC2 w/ 16M NVRAM, onboard battery, 6 disks @ RAID5 w/ 4k blocks; Win2k AdvServer

3. Compaq Proliant 1600 w/ 2 x Pentium2 @ 350Mhz, 512k L2; 256M; Compaq Smart 2 w/ 4M NVRAM, onboard battery, 5 Fast20 SCSI disks @ RAID5 w/ 16k blocks; DAT 12/24G drive; CentOS 4.5, Asterisk, Bacula

4. Sun Ultra30 w/ UltraSparc2 @ 250Mhz, 1M L2; 512M w/ 16 DIMMs; 2 x 4G UltraSCSI disks; Solaris9, Postgres8, OpenNMS

Asante 10M hub (great for sniffing! all servers using 10M onboard ethers) w/ uplink to Linksys 54GL (dd-wrt); ambient temp ~75F w/ 2'x2' exhaust fan; usual load ~2KWatts w/ 3 UPS's

(Decomissioned gear of interest:
Digital Alphaserver 2100 - BIOS failure
HP 735/125 - not enough time
SGI Iris Indigo - not enough time)

  • I just got a poweredge 4200 from a surplus auction. The drives were DoD wiped so the utility partition is gone...is it true that I can't install any new hardware without the EISA utility? Does anybody know where I can get that? Nice video !

  • not a bad set up, and I agree, with limited time there, there's not much security for something newer and more expensive since someone could steal it and use it vs something like this where it'd be harder to make use of.

    5. (Broken) 1.2ghz Athlon XP 2x00+, Nvidia something, 2gb RAM, 2x 300gb hdd (number 1 is dead), 1TB External HDD. Thats all I know.

    6. Apple PowerMac G4 @ 500ghz, 256mb RAM, ATi Rage Pro (AGP), 40gb HDD, Mac OS X 10.3 (based on linux). Again, thats all i know.

    and my dad has a crappy acer with a dead battery.

    2. IBM NetVista 6xxx (not quite shore), 512mb RAM, 1.66GHZ P4, 50GB HDD , Windows 2000 Pro. (Thats all I know)

    3. 1.40GHZ AMD Athlon XP 2600+, 512MB RAM, Windows ME and XP, 50gb HDD. (Again, thats all I know)

    4. Toshiba Satellite C650, Intel Core i3 Mobile (2 phsyical, 2 virtual) 250gb HDD, 2gb RAM, Windows 7 Home Premium.
