In the liner notes for "From The Top," Richard explains how he and John Bettis wrote "Eve." "Eve" written in 1968, was inspired by an episode of a suspense anthology that was on TV at the time. Different stories were featured each week with a variety of guest stars. One starred Carol Lynley and was entitled "Eve." This triggered in me the opening lines both lyrically and musically, after which I completed the melody and John did likewise with the lyrics. Karen was just 19 years old when she recorded "Eve."

========================================

"Eve" was the first episode of a British suspense anthology television series called "Journey to the Unknown. The story occupies the half-world between reality and madness. It involves a department store window dresser named Albert Baker, who has fallen in love with a store-window mannequin. To Albert, "Eve" is a real person, but his love is threatened when she is doomed to be destroyed with other discarded mannequins. Was "Eve" ever anything but a store mannequin? Or did she really come to life for Albert? I used to have the entire episode which I posted on YouTube. Unfortunately, my computer crashed and I lost everything. I think I may have saved it to compact disc, but I've search stacks and stacks of CDs here, and haven't found it yet, but I'm still hoping it'll turn up one day.

  • This isn't the actual video, or is it? Great song

  • In the box to the right of the video, click where it says (more info). The song is based on an episode of a sci-fi series called "Journey to the Unknown." The episode was called "Eve." I used to have a copy of the program and I made this video using excerpts from that episode.

  • Hauntingly beautiful. Carpenters were producing magnificent work up until about 1975, then started repeating themselves.

  • I've heard nearly every Carpenter recording that's publicly available, and think this is Karen's best vocal performance, even though she was only 19 and in her third year as a public singer. The combination of technical perfection and emotional conviction is remarkable. The best female pop vocalist of the 20th century.

  • @improvguru Their health was faltering. I believe if Karen didn't die in 1983, they would have had a comeback

  • Nobody can sing as hauntingly as Karen Carpenter. She really didn't have to try, it just came out that way.

  • Video random...Song amazing KC x

  • Romantique..........

  • NedNickerson2010 thank you, thorns among the roses- I love the carpenters I really do xxxx

  • One of my favourite songs of all time. I was 5 years old when Karen died and thank my late father for introducing her into our family. I still listen to her music every single day in my car and home. My 12 year old and 5 year old love her too.

  • does anyone have chord for this song?appreciate if you could forward it to me.thank you so much!

  • The story about Eve sounds similar to the Olivia Newton-John movie, A Mom for Christmas, where she plays a mannequin but comes to life...that movie is still available for purchase on eBay or Amazon.

  • Beautiful song, great video adaptation!
