He will kill all your fish in time. They seem safe now but either the periodic jolts will slowly kill them, or he will get bigger or really ticked off and blast them. I know this because I had several fish with mine for almost two years, then they started dying for no reason. One night I watched him with NV goggles after all the lights were off, and he would slowly get close to a fish and then zap it over and over until it was stunned enough for him to take a bite. He had to have his own tank

Electric catfish are really cool! I had mine for years and got zapped alot! When he was young, he just tingled my hand a bit but when he got over a foot, he could hit you pretty hard. It got to the point that he would destroy all the heaters and anything electric that cam into contact with the water. I rigged one LED x-mas bulb so both wires touched the water, and when he hunted goldfish or got agravated he would make it flash!

He's the cool one that hides away, but when he comes out everyone gets a jolt. ;)

if sodium channels esp. SCN5A is wrecked. glycine changed > cysteine. pos. 514........asystole causes heart myocardium to lose electric signals...much like a seizure. but in electric fish...mormyrus, etc; it's a seperate organ.
