"Mr. Old Man" narrates Allen's experience with the "older generation" of New Orleans jazz musicians in the Underdawg's unique funky rock-based hip hop style.

"They're always trying to get me to do things their way," says Allen. "I want to bring something fresh and new to New Orleans music. Music here has been the same for over 40 years and the older musicians try to push to keep it that way. I'm a trumpet player first, so when people see that, they automatically attach me to jazz. I grew up playing jazz, but listened to rock, rap, pop, and everything else, so I want that to come across in my music. I love jazz, but my music has to resonate with my generation."

Allen grew up under the guidance of such New Orleans greats as Kid Jordan and Bob French among others. Shamarr Allen & the Underdawgs are a band that pushes music to unexpected places. Their shows are fun and entertaining, but never loses musicality. Their latest single "Let's Go Hornets" (When the Nets Go Swish We Go Wooooooo!) was picked up by the New Orleans Hornets and is played during the games and TV broadcasts.

The title of the CD (to be released this spring) is Allen's cell phone number "504-799-8147". "I want my fans to keep in touch with me. They can call or text about anything at anytime and I answer. They can find out where we're playing, what we're doing, or just say 'Hi!' I like being in touch with my fans and I want them to feel a part of what we do. Facebook and Twitter are cool, but a call is more of a connection."

  • By way love the video. Yall need to upload some videos, the live show audio is distorted.

  • Jessica ask why the older generation hate on the younger generation. We are the ones who carry the music forward. Also re listen to the song all he saying is to stop hating on the youngsters and get with the time. They still playing album while we mp3. Jazz n live music won't survive if it doesn't progress. Traditional jazz has been reduced to elevator music n story of what use to be. It 2011 Louis Armstrong been dead. U must make music for the present.

  • Why hate on the people that have inspired you and many others?
