Rubber Soul inspired Pet Sounds. The Beatles and The Beach Boys had a friendly competition going on at this point going back and forth at each other with their album releases.

You have to look at it in the environment of 1967-68. Radio stations typically didn't play songs that were longer than about 3 1/2 minutes and we have 4 1/2 minutes of material here. Had Brian left that in, the song would have ended up getting little to no airplay. I personally think Brian hit his peak with "Good Vibrations."

    Alright, babe.

Why don't you go get yourself to the nearest recording studio and do something this complex and awesome?

Sgt Peppers came out after the intended release date of Smile. Matter of fact, it is well documented of Paul visiting Brian in the studio during the Smile sessions. There also was pretty strong evidence of an associate removing acetates from the studio for them to hear what Brian was up to. It has also long been maintained that, along with the problems with the rest of the band and with finishing his concept, once Sgt Peppers was released, the "newness" of Smile was lost and Brian shelved it.
