Is a 1969 Italian film by Federico Fellini. It is loosely based on the Petronius novel Satyricon,a series of bawdy and satirical episodes written during the reign of the emperor Nero and set in imperial Rome.

SYNOPSIS: In SATYRICON, Italian New Wave director Federico Fellini depicts the hedonistic, amoral, pre-Christian world of ancient Rome. Using the unfinished classical writings of Petronius as his guide, Fellini invents a dreamlike culture full of strange, distant characters and odd, grotesque events. Though the film lacks a definitive plot or narrative structure, its constants are Gitone (Max Born) and Encolpius (Martin Potter), whose unsavory encounters with sex, the theater, and religion are the film's focal point. Presenting a loosely structured episodic tale of decadence and depravity in ancient Rome, SATYRICON follows the adventures of two students as they negotiate their way through a variety of mishaps, dangers, and sexual encounters. What results is a bizarre journey through ancient Rome. This story is a perfect example of Fellini's accomplished skill in bringing fantasy to the screen.

SCREENWRITER: Federico Fellini, Bernardino Zapponi.

ACTORS: Martin Potter, Max Born, Hiram Keller, Capucine, Gordon Mitchell, Salvo Randone, Magali Noel, Alain Cuny, Il Moro, Fanfulla, Joseph Wheeler, George Eastman, Lucia Bose.

  • The self-absorption reflects that of Roman society, a society not unlike our own. One where a vast majority across the globe live in misery and abject poverty fighting for water, space and beliefs that replace non-existent food as sustenance. The glorious vision of a mad world where an elte abandon themselves to pleasure; bathing in an orgy of blood and copulation. Fellini; circus master, player of tricks throwing the distorted mirror in our faces. Ha, ha, ha, as the minotaur comes for its prey

  • Fellini films are hard to understand for me.. but Satyricon is so beautiful to watch that even if I don't get all of what they are saying it is still such a wonderful theatrical master piece. Even when you watch the trailer for Satyricon it tells you nothing about the movie, just outstanding and enchanting cinematography.
