Leaving a Danube Lock
There were about 68 River and canal locks on our trip from Budapest up the Danube River and down the Main-Danube Canal and the Main River and finally down the Rhine River to Amsterdam. This one is between Budapest and Vienna
Ships are elevated and lowered from one level of the river/canal to another by pumping water into or out of the lock chamber. The lock chamber is 207 yards long and 13 yards wide. There are more than 300 small outlets at the bottom of the lock chamber to ensure a smooth elevation of the ships. At a maximum speed of elevation of 5.3 feet per minute, or lowering a ship takes 8 -- 16 minutes, depending on the height of the lock
