Eugene Istomin, Isaac Stern, & Leonard Rose play "Menuetto: Quasi allegro" from Trio in C Minor, Op. 1, No. 3 (Beethoven)
From: VAI DVD 4337 Istomin-Stern-Rose Trio
CBC telecast of June 23, 1965
In 1961, three of the worlds great instrumental soloists, equally renowned for their work as ensemble players, united to form the celebrated Istomin-Stern-Rose Trio.
Eugene Istomin (b. 1925) began his distinguished career at age 17 with a performance of the Brahms Piano Concerto No. 2 with the New York Philharmonic. Since that time, he has performed with every major orchestra and enjoyed great success as a solo recitalist and chamber player.
Isaac Stern (b. 1920), one of the worlds most celebrated violinists, made his solo orchestral debut in 1936, playing the Saint-Saëns Violin Concerto No. 3 with the San Francisco Symphony. His wide-ranging achievements also include efforts on behalf of human rights and cultural causes.
Leonard Rose (1918-1984) was first chair cellist of the Cleveland Orchestra and the New York Philharmonic before embarking on a brilliant career as a virtuoso soloist. He was also a preeminent pedagogue, counting among his pupils Lynn Harrell and Yo-Yo Ma. Mr. Roses passing in 1984 marked the end of the Istomin-Stern-Rose Trios legendary collaboration.

  • dear DottyParker, I feel the same way about his Rachmaninoff #2 w Ormandy.

I'd love to get that again on CD. His tasteful rubatto was just right. Heart-breaking.

  • Istomin's recording with the Philadelphia Orchestra and Ormandy, of Tchaikovsky's Piano Concerto No. 1 is without compare. I have been looking to replace this recording for many years.

  • Somewhere I have an LP of Istomin and Ormandy with the Philadelphia Orchestra playing Beethoven's "Emperor" Concerto. That was how I cut my teeth on classical music. It was an inspiring preformance.

  • Does anybody out there have a video recording of their magnificent Mendelssohn Piano Trios 1 and 2?

  • Eugene Istomin was quite an underrated pianist. His tone was very elegant. He was a Leventritt Gold Medal winner I understand.

  • What building is this? The hall looks really cool.
