Knot of the Week: Monkey's Fist

When I was in the Marine Corps we made these out of paracord and a smaller ball. We used them as a sap type device when we'd go on liberty call in some of the seedier places in the world like Naples, Philippines, etc. Makes a great self defense weapon that you can just tuck on to your pocket. When done correctly you had the ball bearing/monkey fist on one end a short length of rope (slackline) secured with a 4 or so inch length of rope with a knot on the end for grip/handle

@mhynecalie18 take a lighter or heat gun and gently melt (not burn) the cut ends of the rope, this will seal it from unwravelling. Alternativly, cut with a hot knife

If I am going to cut the excess rope, what am i supposed to do so it won't get loose?
how about the monkey fist without the ball-bearing? Do you simply tie a knot around one end and build it from there?

Mobiusi, To tie the Monkey's Fist sans weighted core, just simple leave it out. The knot will be tied the exact same way, only you'll have to spend more time tightening it.
