Adding on to zlurgo, by making it free, it brings in the massive amount of players, meaning that people would be more willing to put money into the game (buying in-game stuff) when it lives up to (most of) its promises.

I have nobody to play Planetside 2 with so i don't play it and don't get that "Rolling out" feeling.

Because then they'd not get such a huge player amount on their server. A free game gets a lot more players than a charged game. Why? Because they open it for a huge amount of people, kids, people with not that much money, and people that just wants to test a game.
