At the 2010 Stars of the White Nights festival, Willard White is making his Mariinsky Theatre debut, performing Bartok's opera Duke Bluebeard's Castle with Elena Zhidkova. But St Petersburg audiences first saw White in December last year, when the singer took part in a performance of Wagner's Tristan und Isolde and Berlioz' La Damnation de Faust at the Concert Hall and delighted the public with a recital ranging from bel canto arias to American 20th century classics. That is when our conversation took place.
First time I've heard him as Porgy at Lorin Maazel 1976 release.

My first experience of Sir Willard was Mendelssohn's Elijah where he was so noble, elegant and also very strong, in short, ideal Elijah.
Now I can watch this interview and am impressed much more deeply, with his low and soft voice, as well as so impressive story of his life.
Thank a lot for allowing me to have this time with him!

Thank you for posting this excerpt and interview. White is so full of light and positiveness. I hope that he does write a book about his life, which would be surely worth reading !
