The largest population of Monarch Butterflies (40,000 estimated) since 2005 are over-wintering on Elwood Mesa west of Santa Barbara, California. Numbers have been as low as 5,000 in recent years. It's good to see the change in the trend for this remarkable organism whose navigational behavior still baffles science today. Individuals are able to fly to the safety of eucalyptus groves they've never seen before through some as yet undiscovered means.
