@horozuz ***SPOILER*** But didn't you want Tom to get away with it?

Far superior to the boring Hollywood remake. . Damon lacks the finesse and savior faire of Delon. And Clement moves the psychological aspects forward in a more subtle manner. . Plus, the color is just gorgeous in Plein Soleil.

I really enjoyed Mr. Ripley's with Jude law. I have to c this movie it sure looks good & it has a young and handsome Mr. Delon....

Excelent ending. Fatalist and brilliant.

2:50 The Death !

Tom Ripley should be a fascinating sociopath, not some sympathetic repressed homosexual. I think Minghella's interpretation takes away part of Tom Ripley's appeal. Jude Law's Dicki Greenleaf is great though, completely steals the show, the film just seems to drag on after he's murdered.

@SIngli6 I prefer "Purple Noon" but I think that both movies are different. One dates back to 1959 and the other one to 1999...40 years of difference! I don't think that René Clément could get onto Ripley's sexual ambiguity back then as Anthony Minghella could 10 years ago. And both directors probably had different points of view concerning Ripley...Anyway, the fact that some people prefer "The Talented Mr Ripley" and other ones "Purple Noon" is just a question of tastes...
This is one of the best movies with Alain Delon. And, of course, it's much better than the remake with the dull Matt Damon.

I enjoyed the book and both movies. I just love this story so much. BUT, I must say, that I'd pick Alain over Damon any day!
