British Olympic Coach Jim Saltenstall film. Sportsboat "Savage Sailing Team" gybes and rides gale Force 7 and 30+ knot gusts under big spinnaker on The Solent, UK. Nose diving through rough seas and waves full on sailing to the max flat out on the plane. See equally amazing photography at www.kospictures.com.

  • Timing the water in the video as it passes from bow to stearn, on your 20 foot boat, you are doing 20 feet in about one second. Times 3600 and divided by 6000 that TWELVE KNOTS, not 19.6.

When your GPS says KM that is Kilometers per hour, not KNOTS (KTS).

  • @MrHobiecat

19.6 knots was recorded on GPS - boat instruments max 21.2 knots.

The yacht is over 26ft long - 32ft with bowsprit. But even with the correct length, your method of calculation over YouTube is highly inaccurate.

Come on, get out sailing. It's a lot more fun than playing with your stopwatch! :-)

  • Ah yes, like you I've sailed Hobie's many times. But if you have also sailed sportsboats at 20 knots you'll know which feels much faster!

  • carbon main? for irc? what does that do to your rating?

  • @rs2000guy At the time, racing under Sportsboat Rule and IRC there was no penalty for 3DL. It may be different now as this was a few years ago. They were harder to trim on a small boat but were just awesome to use speed wise - and they didn't stretch so were cheaper than materials like Dacron in the long run.

  • OK - to save time... Ben's weight is too far forward (new boat - kicker release too short), flat entry reaching kite hard to set, 3DL mainsail used for IRC is not J80 OD class legal, outhaul was purposely not eased to depower main, backstay could be on more, main hatch should be closed, lazy sheet shouldn't catch on the drum roller, trimmer should have bigger arms, angles were hot due to imminent lee-shore. Anything else?

  • @MrHobiecat - Clearly you spend too much time calculating - not enough time on the water. That boat is doing far more than 12 knots. Looks like 20 easy to me.

  • gostei muito

  • so i Sailed in 25 to 30 knots

  • PUT MORE WEIGHT BACK!!!!!!

  • that mainsail is cristal clear out of the J80 OD rules... anyway, well done guys!! (our record on a J80 is better than 19 knts... jejeje). keep pushing!!!

  • i love sailing but i think dingy's are the best. The more water in the face the better

  • Does anyone know what jim saltonstall's obsession with ferrets is hahah someone must know, surely?

  • I want to sail J80!
