In the mid 1990s, most of the freight that passed through Coventry's night-time freight hub was transported aboard vintage propliners, including Vickers Viscounts and at the time, the world's last operational Vickers Vanguard.

The frenzied, nocturnal, propliner activities which took place from this humble, ramshackle rural location, were captured by aviation videographer Henry Tenby, during several visits in 1995 and 1996. This DVD program features 116 solid minutes of ear-piercing Viscount and Vanguard action, with lots of start ups, taxiing aircraft, landings and take-offs, and engine shut downs. Professionally filmed up close (with tripod) on the apron at Coventry, during busy night-time freight operations.

We also go for a cockpit flight on the world's last in-service Vickers Vanguard (Hunting Cargo's G-APEP) from Liverpool to Belfast, as well as a day-time flight on British World Viscount G-BFZL from Belfast to Coventry, with footage from both the cabin and the flight-deck. Who can ever forget the sound of four Darts or Tynes winding up, or throttling up for take-off power. This DVD forever preserves the memories of these wonderful, graceful British marques.

  • I lived in South Africa in the late 1960's. Air Rhodesia had Viscounts flying to and from Salisbury (as was) & Bulawayo. They used to overfly my house on the Johannesburg airport flightpath. Lovely colour scheme, Fabulous sights, Sometimes used to go to the airport to see the London flight leave. Super VC10's, 7pm every night. There always seemed to be a Viscount on the pan

  • Hi Max .. fabulous memories! As I produce aviation DVDs I am always looking for old cine film, video and colour slides .. specially taken in the 1960s. If you have any footage perhaps you could let me know. Cheers, Henry

  • Thank you for the great comments to my video Gents. Do any of you have any Viscount or Vangaurd video footage? I am always looking for more footage for future DVDs. Thanks again, and glad you enjoyed the clip.

  • It's great to hear those old turboprops howl. They were the best planes I ever flew on. Viscounts had windows as large as movie screens and while crusing at 22,000 ft, the views were amazing!

  • Really outstanding! I love the sound of the Dart and the Tyne engines! Absolutely music to my ears!

A couple of years ago I visited the air-museum in Bournemouth where I saw an interesting video of a Vanguard. In the video you could see the pre-flight checks, the start-up of the engines and the take off. A lot of the shots were taken inside the cockpit. The video itself was played inside the cockpit of a Vanguard flightdeck.

  • The Dart engine was responsible for more deaf airline employees than any other motor!

  • In 1962 I had my only ride on a Viscount. What a great airplane! I can still hear those engines!

  • My first flight in any airplane was in a Trans Canada Airlines Viscount (I think, I was only two) flight from Calgary (the old McCall Field terminal at the SW of the airport) to Vancouver and I'm guessing back on one as well. I do remember them flying out of Calgary for some years after.

  • Bouraq and mandala airlines also operate the vickers viscount

  • I could never understand how the engines hung out over the wings like that

  • I remember it very well on Trans Canada Airlines now Air Canada
