How 1911 Handguns Are Made

It seems like a lot of the gauging is really being done half-assed in a hurry. I know Colt 1911's are great but you'd think they'd be even better if they used some sort of laser/vision inspection system.

you left one stage out,the part showing the guy shaving with slides sharp edges..

@MrMuscleBilly You're right, but I can see a lot of potential for Colt. If they just had some brains they'd be able to make it so much more.

@TheFirearmEnthusiast I think with Colt they just mass produced 1911's just to get out the door for an affordable price. Guys like Les Baer, Strayer Voigts, Bill Wilson, etc. Worry more about quality than just number of pieces getting out. Those guys are small machine shops that have more time and a reputation to hold to make better stuff. That's just my opinion.

@1sttvbn Lot of things I've noticed weren't the best method lol. I'd like to see Strayer Voigts workshop.

Lot of handwork (deburring) goes into making a 1911.

Who is the guy at the end of the video?

Awesome! Nice to see how much work goes into it. I wish Colt would reconsider bringing back the old roll marks and how they were finished.

Great video! A lot of the hands on stuff was just deburring. The roll stamping may be characteristic, and I guess they should stay with it, but hand engraving is quality, that is just an early mass process. Most of the "hand fitting" was done in jigs (what are those), where they wipe the part back and forth, and something like a file is doing the cutting. Very interesting to see the older parts of the line and what it might have looked like back in the day.
I got to thank you guys for the comments and the 7,800 views + 97 thumbs ups, holy cow. I never thought this video would be this popular. Thanks guys.

I got a new stainless S70 repo (2011 made) and was disappointed in the finnish of the pistol.

@chopstick223 I would send it back and tell them to make it right for you. But get ready to be without it for 3-6 months.

Informative, doubt that the CNC was around in the 70's. Did they say where their operation is ? Impressive.
