Not From Where I'm Standing (unsubtitled)

A comedy exploring the possibilities of mis-interpretation, deliberate or otherwise, of sign language.

Not From Where I'm Standing is a short film collaboration between hearing and deaf filmakers, Jez Toogood and Samuel Dore.

The film is a dark comedy which explores the relationship between interpreters and deaf people. Whilst interpreters provide an invaluable service to deaf people in many situations there is always the possibility that they may not be representing the deaf person accurately. This possibility is taken to an embarrassing conclusion when a BSL interpreter is asked to relate something he'd rather keep to himself.

The film was originally shot for the Joy of 8mm in Bristol. This is a challenge for filmakers to shoot a film sequentially on a single roll of Super 8mm film. The first time any of the filmakers see their films is infront of a large audience.

Our original film is just the black and white scenes. At the films premiere the interpreter performed live onstage and interacted with the other characters on screen without a rehearsal.

To save flying the interpreter around the world every time the film is shown, shortly after the premiere we re-staged it to make this screen only version.
