Amapola (J.R.LaCalle) -- Das Meistersextett, frűher Comedian Harmonists (formerly Comedian Harmonists) Electrola 1939 (Germany)

NOTE: In 1927, unemployed actor Harry Frommermann created a German male vocal group Comedian Harmonists, inspired by The Revelers. The members of the group were: Ari Leschnikoff (1st tenor), Erich A.Collin (2nd tenor), Harry Frommermann (tenor buffo), Roman Cycowski (baritone), Robert Biberti (bass) and Erwin Bootz on piano. The group's immediate success continued into the early 1930s, but eventually ran into trouble with the Nazi regime: three of the group members -- Frommermann, Collin, and Cycowski -- were of Jewish descent, and Bootz had married a Jewish woman. The Nazis progressively made the group's professional life more difficult, initially banning pieces by Jewish composers, and finally prohibiting them from performing in public. The group's last concert in Germany was in Hannover on March 25, 1934.
Frommermann, Cycowski, and Collin subsequently left Germany for Australia and the US, performing under the names "Comedian Harmonists" and "Comedy Harmonists" with a new pianist, bass, and high tenor. The remaining members in Germany formed a new group named "Das Meistersextett" (as the authorities forbade an English-language name). However, neither group was able to achieve the original success of the Comedian Harmonists. In America, the emiugrant group was unable to find permanent job, due to hostility to German entertainers, while in the nazi Germany the group was stifled by political in-fighting and heavy censorship. By 1941, both groups had broken up. Although all members survived the war, they never re-formed after the war.
----------------------------------------------------------
"Amapola" was a song composed in 1924, by José María La Calle García (b. 1860 in Cádiz, Spain -d. 1937 in Brooklyn, NY) who also used abbreviated name, Joseph Lacalle. He was a Spanish clarinetist, composer and bandleader who in the United States played in various bands (Le Sousa Band) until he formed his own orchestra (LaCalle Band) and started for Columbia. LaCalle also founded the Spanish Theatre Company in Brooklyn, featuring the original Spanish zarzuelas. In 1924, his song "Amapola" (in Spanish: a poppy) gained international popularity, especially ever since Deanna Durbin presented her own version in her movie "First Love", in 1939. In Europe, equally popular were versions recorded by Tino Rossi in Paris and by Joe Loss Orchestra, in United Kingdom.

  • Ari Leschnikoff - Аспарух Лешников е българин и аз се гордея с това. Прекрасен тенор.

  • @doctormiteva Yes, Ari Leschnikoff - who had that outstanding 1st tenor voice - was lucky to have returned just in time to Bulgaria where his homeland was and where he continued his successfull career :-)) Thank you for reminding!

  • Wspaniałe i nieznane mi wykonanie.

Pozdrawiam :-)

  • Hello Grzegorz - this tune and the intstrumental arrangement of it - sounds super terrific. That composition has several gorgeous, distinct motives and that interpretation - gives justice to each unique beauty of each part. Thanks a million and have a great Friday the 13th and have a great whole weekend!!!

  • @tango3721 I absolutely love their solo imitations of the musical instruments. What unbelievable vocal skills they had! Although - I think, in the field of competition between male vocal groups in the 1930s.Poland with Chór Dana, Chór Juranda or Chór Eryana had no reasons to inferiority complex about that. I'd even say, to some extent Chór Dana had THAT something, lacking in Comedian Harmonists interpretations: I mean warmth and deep emotional contents of the Polish Tango...

  • Although the Meistersextett didn't have the same fame as its predecessor, this performance is brilliant!

  • Dziękuję.

  • Of course, I know the fantastic Comedian Harmonists. But I didn't know they former 2 small groups after their prohibition by the nazis.

This is a nice (and rythmic!) version of this song, thanks for sharing

  • they( Leschnikoff-Bootz-Biberti)were not just followers for they were part of the original Comedian Harmonists

when the original group had to split(due the anti jude laws then prevailing)neither of the two new groups were as succesful as the original
