acrossair, the makers of the TVGuide.co.uk iPhone app bring you Nearest Tube one of the first augmented reality apps to go live in the iPhone AppStore. Forget boring 2D tube maps! Try this amazing new application that tells New Yorkers where their nearest subway station is via their iPhones video function.
When you load the app, holding it flat, all lines of the New York subway are displayed in coloured arrows. By tilting the phone upwards, you will see the nearest stations: what direction they are in relation to your location, how many miles away they are and what lines they are on. If you continue to tilt the phone upwards, you will see stations further away, as stacked icons. Only available to Apple iPhone 3GS users.

Just curious.. why is this better than an app with which you simply type in your current location and destination, and it calculates the best route for you? Isn't it kinda awkward, holding your phone up in public and also turning it around and such..?

This video should explain how it works. Does it use GPS, and how does it know exactly what subway entrance you're pointing at?

this is cool but i want to see a big colored line plotted on the ground showing me exactly where to walk, each color representing a different station. This way you the app shows you the way, augmented style.

nice app....but waving the IPhone around in NYC streets for muggers to see... not even worth it....

This is the absolute single greatest invention in the history of mankind... Too bad I have a Blackberry. Any chance this will get ported into other OS such as Android and Blackberry?
