You couldn't be more right. I guess that's what makes him a tradegy from the very beginning.
He was too smart to end right here, he could have avoided a lot of these encounters. One big mistake was to kill the Lind. L. Taylor guy. If he didn't let his anger get the best of him, he could have avoided being detected in Japan.
That mistake kept him to fight the police.

If I was Light.. to be truly true to my ideals I would leave the police be, Light easily had the intelligence to avoid the police, but he intentionally gave information (Such as showing he had access to police info.) and could have gone killing evil people without having to fight the police. His corruption of ideals led to his death, and also the prevention of justice to evil, who were spared due to him having to waste his time on the police. An intelligent fool..

What he's done is true justice. But like Raito said: "Those who kill, deserved to be killed."
But ironically, he is killing... therefore he must be killed. It's actually a tragedy, but a great sacrifice. If I was in his situation, I would have done the same... to at least "attempt" at saving the world.
