Sept 11, 2001 was the first day of the tradeshow "Network World + Interop" in Atlanta. As an exhibitor, I was there early and first learned of the events via cell phone call from my wife.
Because it was a big networking event, I had arranged to receive live television using MPEG over the Internet2 network. That was going to be our big exhibit.
When the horror occured, a thoughtful University in Washington state switched their multicast MPEG feed to CNN and we displayed it in our booth. It was the only way to get news of the day, so everyone was at our stand watching TV. The major news sites simply melted down.
The Atlanta convention center is right across from CNN center, which in the immediate hours following the news was evacuated because of rumors about more planes on the way, targeting, it seemed, everyone.
