An Ottawa County couple went to Fenwick Marina just before noon Thursday to look at a boat for sale. But rescuers ended up pulling them from the water—inside their submerged car.
"We're sinking, we're sinking!" the female victim screamed to a 9-1-1 dispatcher, calling from her cell phone inside the car as it went underwater.
"I've never seen nothing like this," recalled Calvin Rutledge, a Carroll Township volunteer firefighter. "Car was in there, two people were in there and we weren't sure where they were at."
"They were able to advise at one point they were near a red and green truck, said Carroll Twp. Police Chief Jody Hatfield. "Then they lost contact after that. That's when the vehicle totally submerged."
"When we showed up, the roof was just going under at that time," added Carroll Twp. Fire Chief John Brough. "We got here just in time."
Hatfield and James Hanney, an Ottawa Co. sheriff's deputy jumped into the water to look for the the couple trapped inside the submerged car.
