Watch AND, Listen...... NO it's NOT "packing the bed" (downdraft gasifier).
Hint, "surface moisture" does NOT work, BUT, wet chips do... (MUST start the gasifier on dry stuff first.)

The only reason I can find, is that the boundry between the glowing char, and the raw chips cause a tiny "water gas shift reaction" (NOT the entire chip only the edge that is touching the char). The noise is very repeatable, and last only for the first few moments of each addition of new chips.

  • Can my guess be the temperature of the air changing due to the wet chips cause the pitch of the sound to momentarily change? ....very much a guess.

  • When we quench really hot steel in water, there is a moment when the steam forms in very small bubbles which can make the part being cooled actually vibrate. Could this be a RAPID release of steam?

  • Could the chips in contact with the hot char be vibrating?
