Wolf Niemann of the LEGO Mindstorms Team shows us the Disc Shooter found in the Ultimate Builders Set.
Hello, my name is Wolf Niemann and I work with the LEGO MindStorms Team.
The model that I would like to introduce to you is called "The Disc Shooter". It can, as the name implies, shoot discs through the air.
And it can also, for example, guard your door and protect you from intruders, or you can also use the model for target practice.
But let's look at some of its many functions first.
Down here, at RCX Microcomputer, we have the motor module 2, which, by way of a worm gear, transfers its power into a rotating motion.
As a result, a slow, regular tempo is reached: this is important for aiming.
The new thing about it is that the turntable is computer controlled and is moved very precisely.
Although the Disc Shooter appears to be large and complex at first glance, it becomes a very stable model with the use of the cross beams here on the side.
This is where the pressure sensor is located. This makes it possible for the RCX computer to count the rotations and, thus, to determine at exactly what the disc shooter is pointing.
A little bit further up is motor module 4. This makes the transportation of the disc from the magazine to the firing mechanism possible.
The shooter itself is probably the most interesting thing on this model. Since a turning disc travels further than a disc that is not turning, each one of these wheels has a slightly different transmission. This is dependent upon the speed of the motor. One turns three times as fast as the motor and the other one turns even faster, nine times as fast as the motor.
Because of this, the disc will turn clockwise when it is fired and also travels much further than it would if both wheels were to be turning at the same speed.
To ensure that all these functions work correctly, this model was built many times and improved upon until it functioned correctly, as many models in the Ultimate Builders Set were. To build this model yourself, simply press the "Do Project" button.
