The open source developers of the Exodus Viewer are contributing Viewer support for Normal and Specular Maps, as well as some additional controls for how light reflects from faces. Linden Lab is developing the server side support so that this powerful tool will be available in Second Life.

sculpties ..... wastefull, flexies .... laggy, alpha ... problematic and laggy
Meshes ... are able to generate high detail, from low poly using the good ol game system of normal and specular maps. I really have killed myself laughing from people who wear 200 sculpties alpha hair and 250 sculpty per shoe claiming that a 2000 vertice mesh was the devil, textures are cheap really 4k comp, isnt like its gonna cause the trouble , it should rock

Heh, all that noise about things causing lag... Usually comes from someone wearing multi-scripted hair, adjustable everything, and carrying two or three HUD's ('cause they're so hard to find in Inventory, Dude,) while standing either in a 12-hour cleaned sandbox or next to a Freebie center. Sheesh.

In a technical sense the client can create lag, but it usually does not depend on what computer they are using.
Someone made a (really cool) raytracer using llCastRay that shows the physical shapes of standing and sitting avatars; most objects inworld have worse physics meshes. wiki(dot)secondlife(dot)com/wiki/File:Avmeshforms.png

The physics model for avatars is almost the same as the Sims plumbob. Avatars walking around causes almost zero lag.
And client computers make almost no difference on server lag.

Actually, the physics collision caused by the avatars doing anything except sitting are causing way more "lag" (as in processing delay) than scripts in most situations where the number of avatars are greater than 6. :P. Most of the "rest" is because people are accessing Second Life with less than adequate computers.
