He did not start the fire, but the implication seems to be that he spanked him for playing with matches. The next scene takes place at the sheriff's office, I think and maybe the next day. It's open to interpretation.

I read in an article about Ron Howard that during the filming of this show Howard's dad/manager, who usually was on the set, observed his son smarting off and being difficult with Andy Griffith and the director. Mr Howard took Ronnie, dropped his pants and took him over his lap for a good barebottom spanking. Andy Griffith later came over to Ronnie and said: "You deserved that; you really did"

We've done nothing to provoke you and we've always been good to our parents, and none of us have ever gotten our "bottems whipped" plus, even after a spanking, kids just repeated another bad offense. Spanking basically just has the same effect as a regular time out. I respect your decision about punishing your kids but really, stop fucking judging the ones that don't get spanked

Today's society is full of little punks who need a good whippin...and YES I had no problem whipping my children...in Love...on the Behind..."Spare the Rod...and You Spoil the Child..." God's word is MY LAW...and I don't care WHAT society says about it...kids these days talk back to thier parents and parents turn the other way becuz they are afraid of thier own children or fearful that they will run away or whatever...boo hoo...so what...they will LIVE! More spankings, less Mayhem...Period.

I really didn't get hit, my dad didn't get hit, his dad didn't get hit, etc. and we have all been well educated, respectful, and moral people. Spanking is for parents who don't have the time or skill to actually teach their children right from wrong so instead teach them fear while relieving their own frustrations..

I don't understand people now days sometimes. They say that all of today's kids as disrespectful, or mouth off. When that's not the case, for me, anyway. No, not all of us are brats. Do you mind not saying so? My friend's little brother was being rude and he was kicked out of the house for a half-our. That seemed to do the trick. Yes, just because they don't use spanking anymore doesn't mean that every kid now days is rude, or bratty. I woud tell you to get a clue, but that would be rude.
