The Grayslake Gelatin Factory has stood its ground since the early 1920s. Originally built as a milk factory, it became a gelatin factory in the 1950s, before closing in the mid 1980s. Its current use is unknown.

If anyone knows who the current owner of the property is please let me know, I would very much like to see the insides of this place, however it is active and I will not break/enter.

COPIED FROM A COMMENT:
One of Lake County's longest-lived manufacturers was the Grayslake Gelatin Company, founded in 1922 by Harry Epstein (1874-1953). Epstein's goal was to produce a superior quality of gelatin, which he had begun developing at the United Chemical & Organic Products Company (Ucopco), a gelatin-producer in West Hammond, Ind. In Grayslake, Epstein hoped to take that idea and perfect it.

  • has anyone been to the abandoned boarding school near Cedar Lake? It's supposed to be haunted, etc.

  • @gomer1021 First I've heard of it... got an address?

  • dude its not haunted its abandon and broke done.

i live right next to it calm down

  • @futbol418 Not even abandoned, if it were I would've been inside it already.

  • I have been near there numerous of times. It was much scary before they put in the park and disc golf course. When I was in highschool 10yrs ago along with my early interests in Lake County Lore, we were always told the Gelatin Factory. We even had boxes of it at the Pik Kwik store, where now the condo sits. But, the one thing for sure is that at one point you could get in there through some sewer system and there have been reports of bums and "hooded" figures walking from the area once.10yrsago

  • Lots of memories wandering through Pik Kwik (and Jerry's Parkway before it) and the farm ruins in the Central Park woods. Wish i had the chance to get into that old building on Whitney and Center.

In a way its great they've redeveloped those areas but it makes Grayslake that much more boring.

  • @GCHSFootball25 It was probably Kyle smith or Donald Cunningham!

  • @johndear234 Almost all Grayslake Gelatin was sold years in advance to Abbott, Kraft Foods, and Standard Brands.

  • @KindHeartedPsycho There is Abestoes in the boiler and engine rooms.

  • @syraxus

  • @dotso95 The grayslake Gelatin Co. closed because it could no longer afford the high prices of electricity and natural gas. There were six boilers that produced 180 # of live steam. They ran on natural gas and # 2 fuel oil.
