I am also a Muslim woman. Like so many of my sisters, I CHOOSE to wear the hijab, and sometimes the niqab. What I think is oppressive is people who think they know so much more about my religion than I do forcing my sisters and I to conform to dressing a certain way in order to be "liberated" and "modern" women. Kindly stop telling us how we should practice Islam...that is between us and God only, it's none of your business.

I am a Christian woman with a Master's Degree, and I wear the veil voluntarily. I cover all (or nearly all) my hair when out of the house. And most of the time at home as well. You are misguided to think that this is ABUSE. Some women choose to veil themselves, just as some choose to go about half naked. Veiling is a way of creating personal space, holy space, a way of saying to the world: "This is mine (and my creator's), not yours to gaze upon."

This bus driver has hauled muslimahs before in her buses. so now she has to respect my Islam. To me the hijab commands respect for my character. I am unemployed and anyone who wants to hire me must accept my Islam as well.. It is Allah anone who compels me to wear the hijab. I just have to decide "which" hijab to put on. :-)

Asalamu alaik,um Ayah. Like you I chose Islam and I chose to cover myself in the way my Creator prescribed. Being a single woman from a nom-muslim family how can I be forced to cover? My dad died last year from cancer. Very few in my family are even practicing Christians. I have only had one negative comment about my hijab. A bus driver who knews me from my frequent rides for several years and she said it was a "shame" I cover my "pretty" red hair. The real shame is on her.

p.s. I am a christian. I think more women should practice veiling. I think the women who are on us about veiling are the oppressed ones, not us. You dress for men and to look "sexy" "cute" etc. While we dress for God and we look deeper into what our bodies actually need. Instead of trying to starve ourselves to please some stranger.

I have recently decided to wear hijab or to wear a veil. I choose to wear it. No one asked or forced me to. Many women are beaten regardless if they wear hijab or a bikini. I don't think a veiled woman marks an abused woman. Are you going to be beaten because you wore a pink shirt? Why assume the same for the hijab or burka? Some women actually fight for the right to wear hijab.

These hub pages misrepresent muslim woman at all.. its not at all factual.. you talk about the "fortunate ones" huh.. I can tell you that I am the fortunate one to wear a viel and see the truth and beauty beahind it... All your doing is spreading hate and trying to segregate the veiled and unvieled.. Creating tension amoung communities, and pitting one side against the other.. you dont see veiled women creating perposterous cliches against unveiled women

I am a muslim woman.. I choose the veil! I choose the niqab! Alhamdo lellah! I am not oppressed, I am not forced! It is my own choice and I love it! I wouldnt take it off for anyone or any reason! Alhamdo lellah! Speak to those who are veiled to see if they wanna take it off.. Dont believe the media.. Millions upon millions of women wear hijab or niqab and love it.. we dont want to take it off and we dont need help removing it. thanks but no thanks

the hijab is only a cultural thing...no where is the Koran does it say to wear a physical hijab on your head. It says that women should dress modestly and cover their bodies form opposite sex. Majority of girls i know that war hijab are trying to hide their true dirty selves under it. I think it is all a bunch of b.s
