Wow, that was tense to watch! Did the canoe wrap? I've done the get out of the boat thing as well, but I guess in this situation you both needed to get out at the same time so the back end didn't sink down under the water. As soon as that gunwale dips below the water, you're done.
This could be a good video for a white water rescue training course. I wonder what an pro rescuer would have to say about it.
