I don't take anything away from Secretariat but Cañonero was a great horse. He was not even supposed to be in that elite and had not gotten sick for the Belmont Stakes, who knows? Don't forget that just in the trip to the USA he was held in customs for several weeks and was very weak for the Kentucky. And his record at Pimlico that day stood up for a long time. I am not a horse racing fan but not long ago he still held that record. Secretariat didn't beat it.

I have to respond to the 2 yr old comment on,wanting to see a racehorse. Sure Canonero wasn't  a great like Secretariat was. But he was most assuredly a RACEHORSE!!!!!!

@andreseloym Secretariat actually did beat his record, but because the teletimer malfunctioned they gave him a time of 1:54 2/5. He was timed at 1:53 2/5 by the DRF and that's the time they put in their journal. Frame by frame analysis of both races showed that Secretariat was ahead of Canonero in the stretch. Also, Secretariat's jockey never laid a hand on him in that easy win, wanting to save the horse's energy for Belmont.

@711ATOM Yes it is an exciting race call.....from 1:09 to the end "47.0 exact for 800 (1/2 mile), eastern fleet inside canonero outside, canonero is going easy with eastern fleet..canonero outside, eastern fleet inside, eartern fleet doesnt give up..canonero is going pass EF, though EF resists and come back to the fight on the inside, but canonero on the outside taking over the preakness stakes, canonero for everybody (or the whole world) with the great gustavo avila, canonero wins the Preak S"

For me, this Cañonero's performance was even better than Kentucky Derby. Even though the Derby is a more difficult race, many times a long shot (like himself) has won it coming from behind without traffic problems. But after winning the Derby trailing from 18th, almost nobody (but his connections) thought he would run in the lead so early in the Preakness, and win it in record time, after a terrible fight.
