Reading with your child as they begin to use adult language opens many new opportunities for discovering new words, for talking about what's happening in the story. If you don't yet have a special reading time, try to pick a quiet 5 to 10 minutes to read with your child each day. Before bedtime is usually a good time to quiet down and enjoy a story. If you have a younger child, they'll enjoy listening in too.

Key Points:
Keep books within reach.
Read each day.
Encourage your child to "read" alone.
Ask questions about the story.
Point out ABCs.
Let your child see you read and write.
Provide crayons, markers and paper.
