"Memory" (often called Memories) was a popular song in the early 80's as the climax theme in the Andrew Lloyd Webber musical "Cats". I was just a kid then, and picked up the tune from the radio and played it a lot. I was playing it the other day and got the idea to record my own arrangement with orchestration. So, here it is!
Get the sheet music here: http://carltonforrester.com/sheet-music-memory-cats.aspx .
The song was recorded using the Ivory II for piano and Vienna Instruments for strings, brass, woodwinds, and percussion.
It's been a while since my last video and a few things have changed in my recording setup (for those who are interested in such things)...
For one, I've started using the new Ivory 2 Grand Pianos sample library and I really like it! It's not a groundbreaking upgrade from Ivory but there are several enhancements that I really appreciate. I believe my favorite is the new Timbre Shift capability. For me the advantage of this feature is that it allows better placement of the piano track within a mix. Previously, in Ivory, a solo part would sound great, but then added to a mix of other instruments, it would get lost.
Second, I've replaced my DAW computer with a newer, more powerful PC -- which turned out to be a real task. Anyone who uses a DAW with hundreds of gigabytes of samples and instruments probably understands the time consuming job of installing these libraries. It seems like it took me days to finishing the install process and get everything set up the way I had it on my old machine.
Third, this is my first video in HD. I've acquired a Canon 7D, which was used to shoot this video. So far, things have gone pretty good, and I like the quality. We'll see if YouTube plays nice with HD!
Thanks for listening and please let me know what you think!
Bye for now,
Carlton

Hey Carlton, just one question - what happened to the overhead cam? That was my vavorite view - it allowed me to see how you fingered some of the runs, to give me a better idea of how to do it. Okay, I lied - one more question. When are you going to have the sheet music for this available?

@TheJmz103 I didn't use the overhead cam on my last couple of videos and no one seemed to notice! Now that I know that someone finds it useful I'll try to use it more. I'm getting ready to record a couple more things so I'll make sure to include it. As for the sheet music, I'll probably do this song at the same time as a few others -- in a few weeks. Thanks for the comment!

You might have answered this before...but, do you add the strings later or it just your cool piano doing it? :)

@learnmusicbysight The strings (and other instruments) are recorded separately. Depending on the song it may be before or after the piano. Thanks!
