The contemporary world is in sore need of such people as Ran Blake. He is strange, gloomy, unpredictable. Ran leads a lonely and secluded life. At the same time he is extremely sensitive to the events taking place in the external world.
Last year after a long break Ran returned to performing. During his last concert tour Ran Blake, along with his student and regular partner, guitarist David "Knife" Fabris, visited Vilnius the history of which never ceases to inspire him.
The documentary "Ran Blake. Above the Sadness" filmed in dank December Vilnius concentrates on several meetings of the central character with kindred spirits of his. These meetings allow to reveal the nature of Ran Blake from many quarters and identify the most important topics of concern to contemporary humanists. Ran speaks with the renowned European drummer about homelessness of Jazz; walking through the old town with a prisoner of the Vilnius ghetto, he listens to her story about the tragic suffering endured by Eastern Europe during the Second World War; the central character of the film discusses with the French Cultural Attache films by Claude Chabrol that influenced his aesthetic; Ran takes part in an improvised mini-concert of the most talented students of the jazz department of the Lithuanian Academy of Music; he talks about his childhood, about the nature of sadness and the visuality of his music to the famous filmmaker.
Simultaneously to the main scene we see a 14-year-old boy living his life the presence of which makes the film poetic and atmospheric.

I'm learning more about him and find him and his music fascinating. Does he say anything in the film about his relationship with Thelonious Monk? Thanks.
