Special Report: Strong quake jolts SW China

Despite the constant threat of aftershocks and landslides, soldiers are delivering food and medicines by foot to survivors in the affected regions of Wenchuan county. All roads leading to the areas were blocked due to last Monday's deadly earthquake.

These 10 soldiers have just one mission: deliver food and medicines to several towns in Wenchuan county.

Roads, communication systems in those areas were all blocked due to the May 12 quake.

Over 10 thousand people are still trapped there and need help.

Carrying 25 kilograms of relief supplies each, the soldiers will spend 2 days travelling by foot to reach those affected areas over 100 km away.

Troop Commander Wu Chunhui said, "Aftershocks, landslides and falling stones, we all know how dangerous the mission is. Hide yourself and observe the situation carefully when landslides occur. You must get to the affected areas as soon as possible."

The military has already dispatched a 480 strong force to those towns to carry out the rescue operation and have sent food and medicines to survivors.

One soldier returning from the nearest town said it took them 10 hours to reach the area due to the frequent aftershocks.

Soldier Feng Xudong said, "There were too many aftershocks and landslides when we headed to Yinxin town yesterday. Also, the wind was so heavy that it caused sand storms. We could barely see anything."

The survivors still trapped in the affected areas also asked those soldiers to send messages to their relatives who are in safe areas.

Risking their own lives, the rescuers are doing everything they can to get those victims out of danger as soon as they can.
